Nizhniy Novgorod Oblast

Nizhniy Novgorod Oblast has one of the most developed economies in Russia. It is an important industrial center renowned for modern machine-building, metallurgical engineering, oil chemistry and the defense industry.

Around 600 large and medium-size industrial enterprises operate in the region, employing around 35% of the regional population and contributing around 40% to the regional budget.

The regional administration actively participates in the development of inter-regional and international relations, and considers integration into the world’s economy as a high strategic priority.

The Oblast spans an area of 76,900 km², which is approximately equal to the area of Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg combined. Agricultural land covers 41% of this area; forests, 48%, lakes and rivers, 2%; and other lands, 9%. The region is crossed by the Volga river and has a population of about 3.5 million.

With 1.3 million residents, Nizhny Novgorod is the largest city and the fourth largest city of the Russian Federation, after Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Novosibirsk.
